With the Mubadala World Tennis Championship out of the way, it’s time to set our sights to another huge annual sporting event hosted in the capital.
In case you have no clue, we’re talking about the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship happening from 16th to 19th January at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
This year’s instalment is shaping out to be an exciting tournament, thanks to the changes being introduced in the format.
Here are 3 things worth taking note for this year’s contest…
- The Abu Dhabi tournament has officially joined the Rolex Series, a series of golf events that offer higher cash prizes than regular prestigious golf competitions. This means that the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship has joined the ranks of the likes of BMW PGA Championship, Open de France, Irish Open and Italian Open, among others.
- Just in case the competing golfers need additional motivation, this year’s tournament will carry whopping prize money of $7 million or AED 26 million! That’s a substantial upgrade from last year’s $3 million bounty.
- After winning back to back in 2017 and 2018, English golfer Tommy Fleetwood will attempt to make it three in a row – a feat not seen in the tournament ever since its inception in 2006.
