A testament towards environment conservation
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has unveiled an inspiring environmental initiative known as “Ghars Al Emarat” or the UAE Planting Initiative.
This initiative, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAD, is a testament to the agency’s commitment to environmental conservation.
At the heart of “Ghars Al Emarat” is the promise to plant ten mangrove trees for every visitor attending conferences. This innovative approach combines sustainability, technology, and the UAE’s dedication to addressing climate change. The planting of mangroves will be carried out using cutting-edge methods, including drone dispersal.
The planting is scheduled for the last quarter of this year, which aligns perfectly with the optimal planting season for mangroves. The chosen coastal environments, including the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, Al Mirfa City, and Jubail Island, already host natural mangroves, making them ideal for further growth.
The initiative’s significance extends beyond tree planting. It complements the goals of the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative and provides a platform for pioneering solutions in mangrove conservation and restoration.
Mangroves, as one of the most productive coastal ecosystems globally, serve as vital contributors to mitigating climate change. They absorb greenhouse gases and effectively store and sequester carbon.
Abu Dhabi boasts an impressive 85 percent of the UAE’s mangroves, reflecting the agency’s dedication to preserving these vital coastal habitats. Mangroves offer a sanctuary for diverse biodiversity and play a pivotal role in safeguarding neighboring ecosystems like seagrass beds and coral reefs from sedimentation. Furthermore, they enhance water quality and support ecotourism activities.
The UAE’s history of mangrove restoration dates back to the 1970’s when the late Sheikh Zayed initiated extensive afforestation programs. Today, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi continues this legacy, collaborating with partners to plant over 40 million mangroves since restoration efforts commenced. These efforts span various regions, including Saadiyat, Jubail, Yas, Hudayriat, Abu Al-Abyad, and Al Dhanna.
“Ghars Al Emarat” represents a shining example of environmental stewardship, blending tradition with innovation to create a sustainable future for the UAE and the world.
