The UAE and Antarctica are poles apart in every way.

Geographically speaking, the distance between the two countries is 13,381 kilometres. And don’t get us started comparing temperature levels either.

These glaring differences, however, didn’t stop three adventurous folks from Abu Dhabi to embark on an expedition of a lifetime.

For two weeks, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) staff Rashed Al Zaabi, Mariam Al Qassimi and Winston Cowie explored the freezing continent to witness firsthand the effects of global warming.

What they saw is now the subject of a special documentary titled, Zayed’s Antarctic Lights.

The film, which had its premier at VOX Cinemas in Yas Mall, illustrates the threats imposed by rising sea levels not just in the UAE but also on a global scale.

To mark the end of their mission, the trio and their film crew – collectively called Team Zayed – lit up the Antarctic sky using handy solar lights to send a message of hope, unity and action on climate change.

No details yet as of press time if the documentary will be screened in cinemas or television in the near future.
