An upcoming exhibition at the Louvre Abu Dhabi will showcase the works of celebrated Dutch painters from the 17th century.
Running from 14th February to 18th May, the exhibit, Rembrandt, Vermeer & the Dutch Golden Age: Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection and the Musée du Louvre, will bring together under one roof the paintings, drawings and objects created by some of the most influential artists in history.
Here are some of the interesting things we know so far about the exhibition…
- The exhibit will display 95 artworks and objects.
- Most notable among the featured artists is Rembrandt van Rijn, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest visual artists in history.
- The exhibit will showcase Rembrandt’s 22 paintings and drawings including well-known works including Self-Portrait with Shaded Eyes and his epic painting of the goddess Minerva titled Minerva in Her Study.
- Johannes Vermeer’s The Lacemaker and Young Woman Seated at a Virginal, painted on canvas cut from the same bolt, will hang next to each other for the first time in 300 years at Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The exhibit will be divided into six sections: At the Heart of the Dutch Golden Age; Extraordinary Beginnings: Rembrandt van Rijn in Leiden; The Center of the Golden Age: Rembrandt van Rijn in Amsterdam;Fine Painting in Leiden: Gerrit Dou, Frans van Mieris, and their Contemporaries; Picturing Everyday life in the Dutch Republic; and Historical Lessons and Tales of Morality.
