Abu Dhabi is home to what is believed to be the oldest natural pearl in the world.

Archaeologists from the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) have unearthed what is believed to be the oldest natural pearl in the world.

The pearl dubbed ‘The Abu Dhabi Pearl’ was discovered by the archaeologists from the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) on Marawah Island at a Neolithic site in the area.

Archaeologists estimated the pearl’s existence as somewhere between 5,800 – 5,600 BCE (Before Common Era) after doing radiocarbon dating.

This proves that pearls and oysters were already being used in the UAE as far back as 8,000 years ago.

“The Abu Dhabi Pearl is a stunning find, testimony to the ancient origins of our engagement with the sea,” said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi.

“The discovery of the oldest pearl in the world in Abu Dhabi makes it clear that so much of our recent economic and cultural history has deep roots that stretch back to the dawn of prehistory.

“Marawah Island is one of our most valuable archaeological sites, and excavations continue in the hope of discovering even more evidence of how our ancestors lived, worked and thrived.”

The ancient gem will be on display at the Louvre Abu Dhabi from 30th October to 18th February  as part of the  10,000 Years of Luxury exhibition.

This marks the first time the public will see the historic pearl since its discovery, making the Louvre Abu Dhabi exhibit a must see.
