New Road Cameras to reduce tailgating

Tailgaters beware! The Abu Dhabi Police has installed new road cameras designed to detect tailgating road incidents.

The new road cameras – designed with smart systems and radars – will be operational starting on the 15th of January.

Drivers caught not leaving a safe distance between them and the car in front will automatically receive a text message informing them of AED 400 fine with corresponding four black points.

. شرطة أبوظبي : الضبط الآلي لـ" #عدم_ترك_مسافة كافية بين المركبات" 15 يناير الجاري . تبدأ شرطة أبوظبي تفعيل الضبط الآلي للسائقين غير الملتزمين بترك مسافة كافية بين المركبات على الطرق اعتباراً من 15 يناير 2020 وسيتم ضبط #المخالفين من خلال المنظومة الذكية وأجهزة "الرادارات الثابتة". . وتنفذ شرطة أبوظبي حملة توعية وضبط مروري للحد من تلك السلوكيات السلبية، حيث سيتم تطبيق البند "52" من قواعد وإجراءات الضبط المروري رقم "178" لسنة 2017 على السائقين المخالفين "بعدم ترك مسافة كافية خلف المركبات الأمامية"، المتمثل في غرامة مالية قدرها 400 درهم و 4 نقاط مرورية على سائق المركبة. وستبدأ شرطة أبوظبي بإرسال رسائل نصية هاتفية لإشعار السائقين غير الملتزمين بترك مسافة كافية بين المركبات وتحذيرهم من تطبيق الغرامة المنصوص عليها في حال تكرار ارتكاب المخالفة نفسها. . Abu Dhabi Police: Tailgating to be detected by smart systems from January 15 . Abu Dhabi Police will activate automatic smart system and stationary radars to detect motorists who fail to maintain safe driving distance between themselves and other vehicles. The system will become operational on January 15, 2020. Abu Dhabi Police will implement an awareness and traffic monitoring campaign to curb this negative behaviour. Drivers caught tailgating will be slapped with AED 400 fine and four black points. An awareness campaign has been launched in five languages through social media and video on Twitter to educate more motorists on the dangers of tailgating.

The recommended safety distance between vehicles is 56 metres at 100km/h under normal and weather conditions.

Unfortunately, tailgating is one of the leading causes of road accidents in the UAE.

A study published last year reveals that almost one in two drivers (49 per cent) admitted to tailgating especially when running late. The bad habit covers all age groups including the young demographics ranging from 18 to 24 year-olds.
