Abu Dhabi authorities have circulated a circular outlining guidelines that theatres need to adhere to before opening.
Movie mania has been confined to Netflix and Amazon Prime since March when the cinemas shut down. Yas Island launched their very own drive-through cinema to offer residents a cinema experience but we are still glad that the cinemas will soon be back to screening new releases.
The cinemas will operate in line with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Economic Development’s rules and regulations. This involves an occupancy rate of only 30% for all shows. All customers will need to practice social distancing measures whether they’re heading in for the movie or standing in line to load up on snacks and drinks. Adjacent seats will be kept vacant as long as it is not for family members.

The venue will sanitise the seats 20 minutes before every movie screening which will be topped off with a disinfection of the space at the end of each day. All touchscreens will be removed and no tickets or pamphlets will be distributed to avoid contact by people. The movie team will return only after they’ve been tested negative and will be required to wear masks at all times.
While there is no definitive opening date, the theatres have been given permission to welcome customers once all the requirements are met.
Movie Mondays are going to be back again!
