A large part of the resident population using the bus service to commute in the region can now stop waiting in the heat as Abu Dhabi plans to reopen the bus shelters for commuters.
The bus services that were altered earlier this year have now resumed operations with a lot more buses and routes added to the schedule. The bus shelters however have taken a longer to reopen to avoid passengers crowding inside.
The authorities have been actively trying to make commute user friendly and encourage the public to use them with no concerns. One step in this direction has been the introduction of Wi-fi services in select buses.
Now, a total of 145 bus shelters have also opened to ease the waiting for passengers. There will be 114 shelters in Abu Dhabi, 21 in Al-Ain and 10 in Al Dhafra region. The ITC have worked to ensure that there are shelters in areas with high traffic of commuters with preventive measures to ensure health and safety. The regulations allow only three passengers to stay inside the shelter at a time. The passengers need to wear face masks and maintain a social distance of 2 metres inside and outside the shelter. In addition, the shelters will be sterilised and sanitised twice a day.
The transport system is one among the many facilities and services that have opened up in full swing with rules and specifications in place to safeguard residents.
