We talk to Johanna Andersson CBT & Clinical Hypnotherapist at Change Works Abu Dhabi about the benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) especially for mental health.
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ( CBT ) and its benefits?
CBT stands for Cognitive behavioral therapy. It’s a form of talk therapy – a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps people learn how to identify and change destructive thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior and emotions.
CBT focuses on changing the “automatic negative thoughts” (ANT) that can contribute to and worsen emotional difficulties for example anxiety. With CBT – these thoughts are identified, challenged and replaced with more objective and realistic thoughts. Cognitive Behavioral therapy helps through repeatedly showing us where our thinking leads us astray and offer better alternatives.
Who can benefit from CBT?
CBT is used for a whole range of mental health problems such as anxiety, panic attacks, eating disorders, anger and phobias just to name a few. CBT can also be an effective tool to help people who don’t have a particular problem. It can be useful for anyone who wants to better manage stressful situations.
What will a session be like?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy sessions tend to be very straightforward and “down to earth” – a partnership between you and your therapist. You and your therapist will discuss things in a very open way and talk about what might make things better for you. Some of these ideas might come from you and some from your therapist. During your session you will work together to break down your problems into separate parts, such as your thoughts, physical feelings and actions.
As you go through the therapy process, you may be asked to do homework – activities, reading or practices that build on what you’ve learned during your regular sessions and encourage you to apply what you’re learning in your daily life.
CBT is a great and effective tool that can give you the power to cope with your situation in a healthy way and to make you feel better about yourself and your life.
