Advancing UAE’s Research and Education Sector

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi), a renowned institution for technical education and research in India, is set to inaugurate its first international campus in Abu Dhabi in January 2024.

This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening the bilateral relations and collaborative efforts between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India, particularly in the realm of higher education.

The groundwork for this expansion was laid in June when an essential memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between IIT-Delhi, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and India’s Ministry of Education during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE.

Rangan Banerjee, the Director of IIT-Delhi, emphasized that the Abu Dhabi campus embodies the shared vision of both nations, with a focus on educational excellence, innovation, knowledge sharing, and investment in human capital.

The IIT-Delhi team will take charge of all academic aspects of the new Abu Dhabi branch, encompassing curriculum development, laboratory facilities, and research initiatives. Furthermore, they will collaborate with ADEK and other relevant entities to contribute to infrastructure planning, particularly in the realm of digital infrastructure.

Director Banerjee highlighted the potential for the Abu Dhabi branch to enrich the research and innovation landscape in the emirate. It will actively explore collaborative opportunities with prominent institutions such as the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) to offer comprehensive programs and advanced research initiatives.

In its initial phase, the IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi campus will prioritize fields like computer science, artificial intelligence, energy sustainability, and healthcare, along with various research programs.
