The year 2018 was great, with new attractions like Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi opening its doors and the iconic landmark Qasr Al Hosn returning after years of renovation, just some of the highlights.
This year promises to be even more thrilling and there’s something for everyone to look forward to.
Here are some of the happenings we’re excited about in the coming months.
- The 17th edition of the AFC Asian Cup will take place in UAE from 5th January to 1st February. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain will be hosting some of the games and fans can catch the thrilling football games at Zayed Sports City Stadium, Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium, Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium and Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium. Just how big this tournament really is? Well, think of 24 teams composed of athletes from all parts of the globe slugging it out in the field for the right to take home the title.
- 2019 being the Year of Tolerance is off to a rousing start with no less than Pope Francis visiting Abu Dhabi from 3rd to 5th February. The historic visit marks the first time that the head of the Catholic Church will set foot on UAE soil. The three-day event will see the pope meet with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Muslim leaders, visit cultural landmarks Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Founder’s Memorial, and stage a mass at Zayed Sports City in front of an estimated 100,000 people.
- More than 7,500 athletes with special needs from 192 countries will descend in the capital for staging of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. Happening from 14th to 21st March, the sporting spectacle will roll out various games that will showcase the skills and talents of people with determination. Through the event, the government aims to come up with more platforms to help ease the daily challenges faced by people with special needs.
- Breath-taking acts will take place on Yas Island in March courtesy of the world-famous Cirque du Soleil as part of the Mother of the Nation Festival. The famed troupe will bring dancers, acrobats and performers to showcase their signature dazzling routines. For more tickets, visit tixbox.com
- The new state-of-the-art terminal in Abu Dhabi International Airport is projected to open by late 2019. This latest infrastructure is expected to boost the capital’s growing tourism industry and meet increasing passenger demands.
- Just when you think we had enough shopping malls here, think again. Al Maryah Central on Al Maryah Island is earmarked for an August 2019 opening, giving residents more shopping and dining options in the latter part of the year.
