The Founder’s Memorial is a permanent national tribute dedicated to commemorating the life, legacy and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE.
We have been missing our trips to our favourite cultural hotspots and this one tops the list. SO we decided to revisit what makes this site a memorable visit!
The Founder’s Memorial was inaugurated on 26th February, 2018 which was also the ‘Year of Zayed’ that marked 100 years since the birth of Sheikh Zayed. This majestic piece of architecture is in fact a tribute to the legacy of the founding father of the United Arab Emirates.
The monument which opened doors after six years of planning and conceptualisation is a place where you can spend time amidst lush greenery while you enjoy some art and history of the region. Every aspect of the place from the unique botany to the water structures are a reflection of the founder’s affinity towards protecting flora and fauna and implementing irrigation systems to help the residents. The place helps you gather a deeper understanding of the founder and the work he did to shape the country into the burgeoning hub it is today.
The centerpiece at the memorial is artwork commissioned by artist Ralph Helmick called The Constellation which is a three-dimensional portrait of the late ruler. It has been designed in a way that offers different perspectives from different angles. “At night, the shapes of The Constellation shine like stars, evoking the timelessness of Sheikh Zayed’s vision as a guiding light for the UAE people.” This award winning artwork has been lauded for the innovative way it has combined art and architecture to create something timeless.
At the moment, the indoor visitor areas and gardens are still not open but you can still enjoy the ethereal constellation for free.
There is only limited parking available so make sure you plan accordingly if you fancy a drive down. To get in touch with the Founder’s Memorial call: 02-4100100
